Places of interest in South Corfu
Achillion Palace
The Achillion Palace is located in the village of Gastouri 10km south of Corfu town close to the resort of Benitses. This is one of the most visited places on Corfu. It was built in 1890 for the Empress of Austria. In the gardens there is a large bronze statue of Achilles.
Gardiki castle
On the road at the northern end of Korission lake is a ruined Byzantine Fortress of Gardiki.
Grava Gardikiou caves
Further along the road is the Rock shelter of Grava Gardikiou, an ancient site of caves, which can be found at the top of the hillside. It is a scramble up through the olive grove but well worth a visit. It was the occupation site of hunters and food gatherers in 20,000 B.C.
